Claudio Cassuto started to collect stamps after the Second World War, when he was a kid.

"After the war, everybody was impoverished. But everybody was collecting something," he recalled. "The common thing after the war was to collect. Some collect shells, shrapnels… there were lots around. We also used to collect cigarette card. You can still get collections of these."

But it was the stamps that got him hooked. He said he wasn't really interested in the postal history. "I was interested in seeing the stamps," he said.

"During the period before Queen Elizabeth II, there was very fine stamp printing. I started to collect the reign of George IV, around 1938 to 1939."
