Gypsy Kins

They call themselves Roma, but to outsiders and those who tolerate their presence across North Africa, the Middle East and Europe, they are known by many names: Nawar, Safar, gitanos, tsiganes, or gypsies.

Some of the labels, like Nawar, are indicative of the labeller's perception of the people's standing in society (not very high). Some, like Safar, simply imply that they are travellers. The more famous ones like gypsies are born of the mistaken perception that the Romas hailed from Egypt.

Gypsy is derived from the Greek word "Atsinganoi". Hannah Jackson captured the vivid faces of these gypsy children in their encampment at Tripolis in Southern Greece.
