Independence day
Photos and words by Salina Christmas

Last August, after I compiled this series of portraiture, I spiralled into depression. I refused to write or listen to the interviews that I taped. It was a sadness quite hard to communicate to anyone.

The one thing I find very hard to write about, apart from my family, is my country.

This August marks my tenth year living in the UK. I love it here, but I'm not thinking of being a citizen yet. I make a living here and there writing for trade rags, editing websites, doing photography and so on.

Some writers in Malaysia are so good they end up in prison. Good writers in the UK end up working for the broadsheet and get paid good money. Probably end up on telly.

What a world of difference.
