On the breadline
Photos by Kess Bohan

The West has always had access to cheap food. Food in the EU, for example, is a lifestyle, not a choice. The West gobbles up both GM and organic foods like there is no tomorrow.

Africa, who takes the blame for everything from HIV to overpopulation, is a large, sparse continent of only 770 million people. Infant mortality is high, and the average life expectancy is lower than in developed countries.

Donald G McNeil Jr of The New York Times sums it up very well: "The rich grab too much of everything, including biomass".

The problem, he observes, is 'more Marxian than Malthusian'.
