Daniel Defoe's monument eclipses Blake's tombstone, which is located beside it. I find it strange considering that Blake has a bigger influence in arts and literature than Defoe.

Defoe was known mainly for his two novels, Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders. A little known fact is that he was a business journalist.

Defoe is the Alistair Darling of his days. He used the media to sway opinions to be in favour of the Anglo-Scottish union. In Scotland, he was a spy for the English, and swapped sides in his articles to appease both his English and Scottish readers.

He was a hack. Perhaps it is no coincidence that Bloomberg is just down the road from his grave.
