The figure of a pilgrim on John Bunyan's tombstone.

John Bunyan died on 31 August 1688. The Pilgrim Progress is a very influential piece of work in Protestantism, not bad considering that the author only had up to four years of schooling, and read mainly the Bible and some religious books.

The Pilgrim Progress is an allegory, a tale about a person named Christian, and his journey through life.

Bunyan was frequently at loggerheads with the Quakers during his lifetime. He was in and out of prison for preaching without a license.

His famous descendant is Diamond Day singer Vashti Bunyan, who abandoned her Oxford education to become a hippy.
