Mapping Tibet
I ask Jon if he has witnessed a sky burial. "I don't recall seeing cemeteries there," he replies.
Sky burial is a ritual dissection of the dead. A priest cuts the human corpse into small pieces and then places it on top of a mountain, exposing it to birds of prey.
Condemned as barbaric by the Hans,
it is arguably an eco-friendly way of disposing a body.
To these Buddhists, the lifeless body is only an empty vessel
and the spirit has passed on into another realm.
